LEICA DUOVID 8 + 12 x 42
is
the
very
first high-performance
high-end
binocular
to offer switchable magnification. Depending on the situation
at hand, the operator choose the 8x magnification with a wide field
of view or the 12x magnification with its richness in details. Its
outstanding imaging performance and other refinements make the
DUOVID a unique instrument.
The LEICA DUOVID 8
+ 12 x 42 by Leica Camera AG, Solms are the world's first
high-performance binoculars with switchable magnification from 8x to
12x. The magnification is switched by a simple rotation movement on
the binocular tube. Due to the ADC™ automatic diopter compensation,
the optical adjustment for defective eyesight is retained when the
magnification is changed. Viewing comfort is enhanced by new,
patented, rotatable eyecups, while HDC™ coating gives the outer
optics extra wear-resistance.

The magnification
switching facility makes the binoculars highly adaptable to
different viewing situations: the 8x magnification offers a
particularly steady image with high field depth and a large visual
field of 120 m at a distance of 1,000 m. The 12x magnification gives
a 50% larger image of even the most minute details and is especially
suitable for long-distance viewing.
When twilight
falls, the high twilight factor of 22.45 of the 12x magnification
optics is excellent for viewing small details. As darkness deepens,
the 8x magnification optics prove valuable due to the brighter image
produced by the larger exit pupil. Stephan Albrecht, Product Manager
for Sports Optics at Leica Camera AG, expects the new LEICA DUOVID 8
+ 12 x 42 to put a stop to the discussion about the best
magnification for binoculars. "The Duovid formula is: Two binoculars
in one. This model is the all-in-one specialist for completely
different applications. And the superlative quality of the
successful LEICA Trinovid full size binocular series is achieved at
both magnifications,” Albrecht continues.

Compared with
monocular instruments such as spotting scopes, riflescopes and photo
and video lenses, the necessary coupling of two optical tubes is a
particularly demanding task. One technical challenge was the diopter
compensation, which depends on the magnification. The ADCTM
(Advanced Diopter Compensation) is achieved by a newly developed
mechanical design using a cam. When the magnification is switched at
the left eyepiece, a gearwheel moves the cam. This alters the
position of the focusing lens which is coupled to the diopter
compensation setting. This process can be seen on the outside of the
binoculars by the rotating diopter scale on the top of the central
drive.

Another innovation
are the patented eyecups which can be pulled out to two different
clickstop positions besides the setting for eyeglass wearers. The
LEICA DUOVID 8 + 12 x 42 are therefore the first high end binoculars
to accommodate the anatomic differences of the human face, offering
optimum viewing conditions for all users. The eyecups can also be
dismantled for easy cleaning.
The easy-grip
rubber armoring - in either black or green – and the ergonomic shape
of the binoculars ensure safe handling even in damp weather or when
wearing gloves. The proven multi-function central drive is highly
convenient for setting the focus and diopter compensation.
The LEICA DUOVID 8
+ 12 x 42 features optical coating with extra resistance to
environmental influences. In Leica's modern HDCTM coating
process, the vapor-deposited coating materials are compacted with a
plasma source in a high vacuum. This makes the anti-reflection
coatings, which are only a few thousandths of a millimeter thick,
highly resistant to external influences. HDCTM stands for
High Durable Coating – a long-life coating of the outer optics.
Thanks to this technique, the optical quality features of Leica
binoculars - brilliance, contrast and high light transmission -
last even longer, even when the binoculars are used in extreme
conditions such as hunting, astronomy, field ornithology and water
sports.
Like Leica Trinovid binoculars, the LEICA DUOVID 8 + 12 x 42 are
also waterproof to a depth of 5 meters and nitrogen-filled.
