Why does Ben's® 30 Tick & Insect Repellent use water instead of alcohol as most other DEET insect repellents do?
Water has replaced alcohol in Ben's® 30 Tick & Insect Repellent.   Water does not evaporate as quickly as alcohol, and does not open the skin's pores, thereby reducing the need to frequently reapply the repellent.  Thus, Ben's® 30 Tick & Insect Repellent will be an appropriate choice for protecting children as well as adults and it leaves more insect repellent on the skin so that it fights against biting insects longer.

Alcohol creates a strong aroma providing the traditional "insect repellent" smell. The water-based formula isn't as strong smelling and much more pleasant. *

How To Use Ben's® Tick & Insect Repellent
Because Ben's® Tick & Insect Repellent is so effective, there is no need to keep reapplying. Use just enough to cover exposed skin and apply to clothing.  Do not apply to skin that will be covered by clothing.  For the face, apply Ben's® Tick & Insect Repellent to your hands and rub on the face.  Avoid eyes and mouth.  Apply sparingly around ears. Where Did DEET Come From?

DEET HISTORY
- In 1946, the U.S. Department of Agriculture developed DEET for use by the military.
- For the past six decades DEET (a.k.a. N,N-diethyl-m-tolumide) has been the most widely used insect repellent in the world. The reason for its universal appeal? It's simple: DEET remains the most effective type of insect repellent available. *

DEET DIFFERENCE
- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recognizes DEET as one of the only active ingredients (the other is Picaridin) that demonstrates a higher degree of effectiveness in repelling insects than all other EPA-registered active ingredients.

WATER VS ALCOHOL-BASED DEET REPELLENTS
While it's always advisable to keep a bottle of DEET-based repellent on hand for the car, home, cabin or holiday destination, it's important to remember that not all repellents containing DEET offer the same duration of protection. Most repellents containing the active ingredient are alcohol based. By its nature, alcohol evaporates at a faster rate than water. And when the alcohol evaporates, DEET goes along for the ride.
