With map and compass, you can locate your current position
by learning and practicing these simple steps. This skill can be used to
keep track of your position or to mark a position for future returns.
| 1)
| Choose two landmarks
in your view and find them on your map.
| 2)
| Now
hold your compass horizontal in front of your body, and point the "Direction of Travel Arrow"
on the compass, towards
one of the landmarks.
| 3)
|
Now rotate the compass dial until the north end of the
compass needle is aligned with the ?
? or
north arrow printed on the compass dial.
| 4)
| Now
read the compass bearing at the Index Line.
| 5)
|
Place the compass on your map with the edge of the
baseplate touching the landmark on the map.
| 6)
|
Pivot the compass baseplate on the landmark point until
the Orienting Arrow aligns with the Magnetic North lines.
| 7)
|
Draw a line on the map, starting at the landmark and
running along the edge of the baseplate, across the map.
| 8)
| Repeat
the above steps with the second landmark.
| 9)
|
Where the two lines intersect is your location!
Wow...Cool!
