1)

  Orient Map & Compass

Orient your map to "north"; then place your compass on the map, with the edge of the baseplate connecting your starting-point and destination-point, as seen in the image to the left.  Click Images For Large Views.

Take A Heading Reading

Turn the Compass Dial until the ?? aligns with Magnetic North (MN) on the map.  Your heading bearing (direction to travel) is read in degrees, at the Index Line on the compass's Dial.

Follow Your Heading

Hold the compass level in front of you, with the 'Direction of Travel Arrow' pointing straight in front of you.  Make sure the needle is free to turn.  While holding the compass steady, turn your body until the Red end of the compass Needle is directly over, and aligned to, the Red Orienting Arrow and ?? on the Dial.

Using the 'Direction of Travel Arrow', sight a distant landmark that your compass is now pointing to, and move to it.

Repeat steps 1-3 to navigate and reach your final destination.
