Who Is Your Outfitter?
Tip: Only Use a GPS Receiver To Enhance Locating The Destination; Use A Compass & Map When Navigating To The Destination Determine bearing and distance using your GPS receiver. Then, turn the GPS receiver off and use the compass to travel close to the destination. When you get near your destination, turn the GPS receiver on to help locate the destination point. This practice will increase battery life of the GPS receiver, and more importantly, knowing how to use a map and compass together could be an asset when your GPS receiver stops functioning.
Tip:
Use A GPS Plotting Compass
When working with a GPS
receiver, use a baseplate compass designed for use with the GPS
system. These compasses provide a UTM roamer scale that is the
easies to reference points on a map and GPS receiver. The GPS
system works with the UTM global coordinate grid system, which
provides a unique reference address to every point on the
surface of the earth. The compass's roamer scales can be used
with all the standard topographical map scales of the world. By
using the roamer scale, a user can quickly determine precise UTM
waypoints that can be entered into a GPS receiver. A waypoint
from a GPS receiver can also be located quickly on a Topo map by
transferring the UTM coordinates to the map using the same
roamer scale.
Tip: Practice And Become
Expert
Before heading into the
field, practice using the GPS Map Compass with a GPS receiver
and a map in a familiar area. Become expert with map, compass
and GPS receiver, and educate yourself on survival techniques.
You only have yourself to rely on!
