The Eclipse GPS Compass's baseplate features UTM Roamer Scales and a confidence circle template built into the baseplate. This compass is designed specifically for working with the UTM grid, and GPS waypoints on topographical maps and charts.

Vial

The vial contains a needle disk with a red circle "N" and a blue orienting circle. The fluid inside the vial stabilizes the needle disk.          

Needle Magnet Disk + RED Circle "N"

The needle disk is a permanently magnetized NdFeB material, which orients the red circle "N" to magnetic north. The "E". "S" and "W" are printed in white on the black disk for quick directional reference.

Blue Orienting Circle

The adjustable blue orienting circle is for bearing determination and magnetic declination adjustment.

Azimuth Ring

When rotating the azimuth ring, both the graduated circle (graduated from 0? to 360? at 1? increments) and the blue orienting circle turn.

Index Lens

The bubble shaped index lens magnifies the graduated dial and the green index line. Read bearing at the green index line.

UTM Roamer Scales

The Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) grid roamer scales, located on the clear baseplate, are for position measurements and plotting.

GPS 100 Meter Confidence Circles

On a map, the appropriate scaled confidence circle drawn around an approximate GPS position, indicates your actual position will be within the 100 meter circle, 95% of the time.
