This is the standard U.S. Navy Helium/Oxygen Mixed Gas Helmet based on the standard Mark V Helmet design.  The main feature of this helmet is the canister mounted on the rear of the helmet and a venturi system enabling recirculation of breathing gas to conserve Helium.  The canister was filled with a scrubbing agent to remove Carbon Dioxide from the breathing mix.

The Breastplate is the same as a normal Mark V except the lock assembly is located in front in place of the spitcock.  All other parts are the same as a standard Mark V except for the omission of the spitcock valve, and the addition of a extra communications elbow which the Navy used to connect electrically heated underwear to a power source.

The Canister Can Be Removed and with the canister elbows capped the helmet can function as a normal Mark V.  Standard Finish is Tin plate but the helmet is also available polished.

Two Versions The U.S. Navy Mark V Helium Helmet Is Made In Two Versions.  DESCO Will Make Either Style For Our Customers.  The Newer Style Incorporates a Double Exhaust Valve on top of the helmet.  This Change Was Made In The Early 1950's.

The DESCO Shallow Water Helmet is the most basic design in our helmet line. It was produced for commercial use in the 1940's.  The Shallow Water Helmet differs from other helmets in that the breastplate and top are permanently joined together.  The helmet rests on the divers shoulders without being attached to a diving dress.  The helmet is held in place by weight.  Air is exhausted from the helmet by it escaping under the breastplate lip.  It comes high polished and complete with front and back weights.

The DESCO Shallow Water Helmet has the standard square 6 3/4"x 7" front window. The top shell and breastplate are riveted and soldered together. The window is polycarbonate. It comes with two kidney weights held on with Mark V Flanged Wing nuts.  The helmet is also equipped with a Mark V Non-Return Valve. A cast handle is mounted on the top for carrying and to aid in donning.  The nametag is the old cast "Diving Equipment & Salvage Co." tag soldered to the upper rear of the shell.

The DESCO "Lightweight" series of helmets are of the same materials and constructions as their heavier brothers. They have considerably less weight and volume than the "heavies". All share the Lightweight (Sponge) pattern breastplate and top shell, with modifications to suit varying customer and market demands

The Sponge Divers Helmet features a screw in faceplate. The side and top windows are secured with rings threaded into the bases and are without guards. The exhaust is a non-adjustable head butt type. The non-return valve is integrated into the air inlet elbow. Breastplate loops and communications is optional.
