The UTM Grid System Is Marked On USGS Topographic Maps With Blue Ticks In The Map's Border; And Is Labeled Using An Easting And Northing Coordinate Format.  Full UTM Labels (4722000mN) Are In The Lower Right-Hand And Upper Left-Hand Corners Of The Map, With Other UTM Labels Abbreviated (4731).

Identifying A Point On Any USGS Quad Map, In A Way That Can Be Used By Any GPS Device And Shared With Anyone, Has Now Become Extremely Easy With The Use Of The Quad Romer; A Scale Included On The New Brunton QUAD TOOL.   Place The Corner Of The Romer Over The Exact Spot On The Map To Be Plotted.  Now Simply Read The Meters To The Left Of The Corner First, then add that meter number to the value on the scale at the left side of the square '662' (see image above, left lower corner).  The formula is 600 meters + 66000 = 662600 meters East (easting value).  Now Read The Meters Down From The Corner, then add to the value of the bottom of the square.  4722000nN.  The Formula is 540 meters + 4722000 = 4722540 meters North (northing value).  Now add the zone number, found at the bottom of the quad map and note the datum of the quad map.   The Spot's Final Coordinates are "Zone12 662600 4722540 Using Map Datum NAD-27 US".

You Have Just Plotted The Spot's UTM Coordinates.  The UTM Coordinates Refer To The Unique Exact 1 Meter Square On The Earth's Surface!

Slope
Slope in degrees, is the angle of inclination. The Quad Tool Slope scale is primarily for maps using 40-foot contour intervals.  The contour intervals (40 ft.) are marked with light brown lines and the index contours (200 ft.) with dark brown lines.
