FOOT NOTE | SEA KAYAKING LAKE SUPERIOR
LAKE SUPERIOR
Lake Superior Is
The Largest Fresh Water Lake In The World.
It has the largest surface area of any freshwater
lake in the world. It contains almost 3,000
cubic miles of water; that would be enough water to
fill all the other Great Lakes, plus three
additional Lake Eries! With an average depth
approaching 500 feet, Superior is the COLDEST and
deepest (1,332 feet) of the Great Lakes.
The lake stretches approximately 350 miles from west
to east, and 160 miles north to south, with a
shoreline almost 2,800 miles long.
Ok... We Call This A
Freshwater Sea! It Has The Classic Character
Of A Sea, With Its Massive Open Water Where Land Can
No Longer Been Seen In The Distance On Land Or Sea,
And With Its Hostile Weather And Rolling Waves.
Sea Kayakers
Should Always Wear A Proper Wetsuit Or Drysuit When
On Lake Superior And Have A Working Marine Radio
Onboard And Monitoring Channel 16. Anyone
Who Falls Into Lake Superior Is In Immediate Danger
Of Hypothermia Shock; And Can Die In A Relatively
Short Period Of Time If Remaining In The Water!

In 2007, Mr. Gene
Casanova, Took His First Recon Exploration Of This
National Park During A Planned Solo Multi-Sport Sea
Kayaking, Island Hoping, Island Camping, Sea Caving
Adventure/Equipment Field Testing, During The
Last Weekend Of August 2007. This Area Truly
Has World-Class Wilderness With Its Dynamic
Violently Formed Sea Caves Shorelines, Open Water
Sea Kayaking, And Untouched Island Wilderness;
Located With Trails And Open Wilderness Camping
Access. Considering To The Hostile Open
Waters, And Shallow Depths Over Dynamically Carved
Sand Stone Boulders Under The Water's Surf And
Throughout The Sea Caves, A Proper Sea Kayak, With
Proper handling Skills, Should Be Consider The
Optimum Exploration Watercraft.
During His Island
Hopping, Distances Paddled Between Islands Were A
Little Over 3 Miles, With The Last Paddle Back To
The Starting Point, Of Some 12 Miles. During
The Paddling Hours, A Special Marine Navigator
Watch's Countdown Timer Was Used To Keep Track Of 15
Minute Intervals; The Time Indicated To Drink A
Professional Muscle Maintenance Supplement.
Both The Global Navigator Watch And The Supplements
Were Being Field Tested ------ Both Proved To Be
Exceptional! The Timer And The Supplements
Were A Perfect Match! At The End Of The Two
Day Recon And Adventure Challenge, Gene Has No
Muscle Aches, And Felt Great; Just Out Racing A
Sudden Thunderstorm Cloud Passing Through (A Regular
Occurrence On Dynamic Lake Superior).
After Adventuring
Around Australian's Outback, The Glacial Tasmania
Island, New Zealand, Fiji, Bali, Over The Past 10
Years, And Venturing Through Many Of Own U.S.
National Parks Across The U.S. During My Lifetime, I
Would Rate The Apostle Islands A True World-Class
Wilderness Experience Area And A Quite Natural
Wilderness Adventure Destination Gem.
UPDATE: March 2008
Ice Caves!
----- A Week Before
My Planned Cradle Mountain Summit Attempt; Equipment
Field Testing Photo Shoot Expedition; At The World
Heritage Park, Located In Tasmania Australia, I Head
Up To The Frozen Apostle Islands. After
Monitoring The National Park Services Web Site For
The islands, I Discovered They Do Not Update Their
Web Site Reports! I Was Waiting To Read The
Lake Surface Was Frozen Around The Caves, For My
First Winter Recon Of The Mainland's Sea Caves.
After Locating A New Online Earth Image Service Of
NASA, I Was Able To View A Color Satellite Image Of
Lake Superior From The Day Before, And Discovered
The Lake's Surface Has Frozen In Around All The
Islands Near The Mainland.
The Drive Was Worth
It! I Drove Up Late Afternoon. Early The
Next Moring I Arrived At 'Little Park Road' Also
Known As Meyers Rd.; A Short Scenic Road Cut Through
Thick Forest Trees To The National Park's Kayak
Beach On Squaw Bay. A Paved Road, Paved
Parking Area And Posted Information. There Is
An Open Shelter With Picnic Table, And A Large Set
Of Wide Wood Stairs Down To The Sand Beach Level.
The Posted Information Claims The Sea Caves Along
The mainland Beach Is A 1.5 Mile paddle.
However, It Will Prove To Be A Longer Hike Along The
Frozen Shoreline. The Ice Covered Sea Caves
And Newly Formed Ice Caves Were Spectacular!
