The Piri Reis Map, shown above, is the oldest surviving map to show the Americas. This Turkish map bears a date of 919 in the Moslem calendar, corresponding to 1513 in the Western Calendar. It is in the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul, a fabulous museum. The map was lost for a long time and only rediscovered in the 20th century.

The map is a portolan chart, a common form at this time. Instead of latitude and longitude grids, compass roses were placed at key points with azimuths radiating from them.

How Many Maps (TOPO, USGS, Marine Charts, etc.) Will One Bottle Coat?

A 4oz bottle will coat approximately 8-10 square feet of paper maps. One ounce per 2 to 2 ? square feet of paper map. This varies depending on the paper's absorption rate, and the user.

Why Should I Use Map Seal Instead Of A Zip Lock Bag?

First, when it is raining, or when in a raft, or aboard a boat, the dam environment and rain will probably get onto the map when the bag is opened to reposition the map; causing the paper to weaken; causing mold and mildew to have a chance to set started, in, etc.. Can I Fold A Map Coated With Map Seal?

Yes, Map Seal actually encapsulates the entire map in a durable thin layer of plastic. Wherever you fold the map, Map Seal acts as a plastic hinge. You can fold and unfold numerous times without tearing the map.

Can I write on a map coated with Map Seal? What kind of markers?

Coated maps can be written on with various types of markers. Pencil works well. It is best to experiment to find just the right solution for your purpose and the environment the map will be used in.

How should I store my coated maps?

Always store coated maps loosely in a breathable NON-airtight enclosure.

Do I need to re-coat the maps occasionally?

No. Only one application of Map Seal is necessary for the life of the map. After I coat my maps with Map Seal how do I dry them?

1) Best to hang from a clothesline with clothes pins.

2) Pin top two corners of map to the edge of a utility table.

3) If carefully monitored wet maps can be laid on a Formica top or other smooth hard surface while drying. However, the map must be lifted completely off the surface every minute or two. This prevents sticking to the surface

WARNING ! Do not allow the wet side touch itself or any other object while drying!

WARNING! Never allow coated maps to be pressed hard together for prolonged periods of time. This could result in the maps getting permanently stuck together!
