Real World Experienced Advise:

I Found Myself In Heavy Rain Conditions During A Short Mountaineering Adventure In Australia.   The Adventure Was A Spur-Of-The-Moment Plan, In A Very Remote Location Far South Of The Equator.   The First Day Came With Clear Skies.  Since It Was Winter Season In The Region, Rains Were Frequently Expected.  The 3rd Day Was Filled With Thick Rain Clouds.   Since This Was An Unexpected And Unplanned 3-Day Adventure During My Travels Abroad, A Topographical Trail Map Was Purchased At The Entrance To This World Heritage Park.  Unfortunately The Park Store Did Not Have Map Waterproofing Products Available.

As Expected, Even With Using Protective Methods Of Leaning Over The Map While Wearing A Platinum High Performance Columbia Sportswear Jacket Designed For These Conditions, The Map Became Damp, Then Wet, Then Soaked, Then Began To Come Apart At The Folded Seams.  Using The Combination Of A Current Map, An Accessory Compass And A Garmin 276C GPS System, We Were Able To Traverse The Flooded Mountain Trails And Get Back Safe.

For Future Return Trips, I Had To Purchase A New Dry Topo Map, When We Left The Park. The Original Map Was Soaked And The Paper's Fibers Were Coming Apart Quickly.  The Original Map Was Thrown Away - The For The price of The map, I Could Have Used This Map Waterproofing Product And Had The map For The Next Day's Adventure!  I Ended Up Buying Two Maps Over The Duration Of The Three Days Total In The Area, And Now The 2nd map Is Showing Signs Of The Folds Breaking Down, Which Will Change The Dimensions Of The Entire Map - Which Makes Location Plotting More Inaccurate.
