Understanding The
Function Of The Searchcoil Is Important For Optimal Metal Detection.

The common searchcoil
used with a metal detector forms an electro-magnetic field
both above and below its surface. When metal comes into this
field, it becomes energized by the magnetic force and
in-turn produces a magnetic field. If this field is strong
enough, and if the receiving wire-coil inside the searchcoil
is sensitive enough, this magnetic field will generates a
tiny current (signal) in the searchcoil's receiving
wire-coil.
The metal detector's
main control box is responsible for:
-
Producing a current
through the searchcoil in order to generate a magnetic
field from the searchcoil's wire-coil.
-
Receive any
electrical signal from the receiving wire-coil inside the
searchcoil.
-
Process the signal
received.
-
Indicate to the user
a metal object is inside the immediate magnetic field
being produced.
The searchcoil is
responsible for
-
Producing the
magnetic field.
-
Forming the shape of
the magnetic field, thereby creating the search pattern..
-
Receiving a detected
object's magnetic field signal.
Searchcoils are basic
in function and the technology involves shaping the search
pattern. Most searchcoils are round. The size of the
searchcoil affects the depth a target can be detected, and
effects the sensitivity to a specific target.
Searchcoils are made in different sizes
which offers a range of detection field patterns for different
search criteria. Presently, there are two
searchcoil technologies being marketed; the 'DD' or
'Double D' searchcoil and 'Monoloop' or 'mono searchcoil'.
By changing the size and shape of the
searchcoil, the metal detector can become more versatile for
changing conditions in the field, and its use capabilities.
The Searchcoil
Is The Most Vital Part of a Metal Detector
The searchcoil is
the part attached to the control housing that produces
the search pattern of the machine. The
searchcoil contains a transmitter and receiver antenna, which
provides the means to produce the magnetic pattern used
by the detector to sense metal objects.
Searchcoils
are available in several shapes and sizes to meet a
variety of hunting needs. Generally speaking, small
searchcoils are designed to detect small shallow
objects, while large searchcoils are used to find large,
deeply buried objects.
Searchcoil can range in size from 3
to 24 inches in diameter. An all-purpose detector is
usually equipped with an 8-inch or 9-inch searchcoil,
practical for scanning parks, playgrounds, beaches and
other popular coin-hunting locations.

The manufacturers of metal detectors
design and build searchcoils to be tuned to a specific
transmitter circuit used in a specific detector model. We high
recommend you only use the specific searchcoil designed by and
built by the original detector manufacturer. Anything else is
entirely at your own risk or wasting your time detecting or
worst, wrecking an expensive piece of electronic equipment. Be
smart and enjoy your time with a quality built metal detector
backed by a well established manufacturer.
Qualifying the
Information Source
Before you read all
the wild claims and hype in the metal detecting market
place. And before you listen to all those wild stories and
the "know-it-all" types in the hobby, qualify the
information source!
To give merit to the information
presented, I offer the following qualifications. I have used metal detectors in hobby and
professionally since at least 1968. When I was a young boy
interested in electronics, science and two-way radio
technology, I came upon the metal detector. I read many metal detecting books
published by the leading technology manufacturers, watched
manufacturer's
videos, and most importantly, I majored in science including
electronics in school. Since 1968, I have had the
privilege to use many of the metal detector models produced
by all of the leading manufactures in the industry. I have had the privilege
of being part of the metal detecting industry through our
corporation, Casanova's, a full line authorized dealership
for the major brands of metal detectors in the world.
With this understood,
I offer you practical information you can use -
