Radiation Dangers
The IAEA and the International Organization
for Standardization (ISO) launched the new
symbol on Feb. 15, 2007; to help reduce
needless deaths and serious injuries from
accidental exposure to large radioactive
sources. It will serve as a supplementary
warning to the trefoil, which has no
intuitive meaning and little recognition
beyond those educated in its significance
A Geiger Counter Is
A Radiation
Detection And
Measuring
Instrument. It
consists of a
gas-filled tube
containing
electrodes, between
which there is an
electrical voltage,
but no current,
flowing. When
ionizing radiation
passes through the
tube, a short,
intense pulse of
current passes from
the negative
electrode to the
positive electrode
and is measured or
counted. The number
of pulses per second
measures the
intensity of the
radiation field.
It was named for
Hans Geiger and W.
Mueller, who
invented it in the
1920s. It is
sometimes called
simply a Geiger
counter or a G-M
counter and is the
most commonly used
as a portable
radiation
instrument. |

Ranges
The meter is calibrated from 0 to .2 MR/HR. The
second range allows sample readings of 10 times
stronger. The 3rd range allows sample readings of
tens times stronger than #2 range.
The .2 position is the most sensitive range and is used
for normal survey work, checking weak samples and
monitoring background count.

This Geiger Counter is highly responsive with three
ranges, an audible speaker, LED counter, automatic
voltage regulation and is sensitive to beta radiation.
Operates for 200 hours on one battery. Comes complete
with instructions and battery.
Includes a circuit that has been specially
designed to compensate for the remote Geiger tube cable
assuring complete fidelity in all readings.
