The DEUTER Team

Deuter was founded in 1898 by Hans Deuter.  He received his first large order from the Bavarian Post Office for all of their postal bags.   The Deuter company focused on backpacks, tents, leather goods, and wagon covers.     The company excelled in the outdoor market, outfitting some of the earliest trips into the Himalayas during the 1930s.  Even in the early 20's of the last century, Deuter furnished many famous German expeditions all over the world with backpacks, carry bags, tarpaulins and tents.

There is a long history between Deuter and the Nanga Parbat.  Attempts by the summit, of the tragic Himalayan expeditions of 1934 and 1937, were completely furnished with Deuter backpacks and tents.  Hermann Buhl carried a Deuter backpack during his now famous single-handed summit attempt on the Nanga Prabat on June the 3rd, 1953; forced to leave it on a lower peak.  This was inspired by the hope that with a lighter weight, he would be faster, since he was suffering from altitude sickness.  On the descent, he had to spend the night without his backpack, since he underestimated the length of the route.  He slept standing up against the rock face, without cover, a bivouac or safety rope.  It was relatively warm and without wind chill, otherwise he would not have survived the night.  During the expedition, the equipment stood up to the task at hand, as confirmed by the expert opinion of Dr. Herrlingkoffer:
