Preparing For An Adventure Abroad

Preparing for a dive adventure abroad is just as important as the dive itself.  Pre-adventure planning will help ensure a safe, enjoyable, exciting experience with great memories.  It all starts with quality planning; experienced and qualified information; and being properly outfitted!

Know Your Destination

• U.S. Citizens Can Consult The U.S. Department of State Website (www.state.gov) for reports, travel warnings and other announcements regarding travel aboard; outside the US.

• Research the planned destination!  Search Out Information Online; Qualify The Source of Information As valid And Up To Date.  Once The Information Is Qualified As Good, Read Everything!   Search Online For Local News Papers, Government Traveler's Information, Local Government Web Site, Local Business Web Sites, Weather Reports, etc..  Check To See The Date Of The Online Information.  Use Email Contacts When Possible To Verify Information.  A Secondary Source of Information Can Be Published Guidebooks, Books On The Area, And Magazines.

  1. Find And Learn Basic Local Customs, Laws

  2. Find Medical Emergency Response Capabilities, Location Of Local Hospitals, The Capability Of The Hospital, Can The Hospital Handle Dive Injuries Specifically!

  3. Check To See If Air Lift Service Would Be Available For Decompression Sickness, Or Medical Emergencies At Sea!

  4. Check Where The Nearest Decompression Chamber Facility Is Located That Will Except Dive Emergencies!

  5. Check Your Insurance To See If Air Lift Is Covered For Medical Emergencies!  If It Covers Dive Medical Emergencies, If It Covers On Board Boat Medical Emergencies!

  6. If Dive Insurance Is Needed, And/Or Dive Travel Insurance, Consider DAN Dive Travel Insurance!

• Book Flights, Hotels, Etc. well in advance to avoid unnecessary fees and undue hassles.  Keep Contacting The Airline To Make Sure Your Ticket And Space Is Secure!  We Have Experienced Nightmares First Hand And Was Able To Respond Correctly And Work Out Solutions Within 8 Hours Of Scheduled Flights That Were Canceled!  We Learned On The Spot First Hand.... Do Not Trust Airlines or Anyone!  Always Check And Recheck Verified Tickets And Reservations!

• Contact a local dive store if possible in the area you planned your adventure dives, for recommended gear lists specific to your destination!  Do Not Rely On A Dive Shop In Your Area That Is Not Currently Diving The Destination You Are Heading To!   Note, Many Dive Stores Can Now Offer Travel Diving Destination Packages.  The Sport Dive Industry Is Expanding Into The Travel Dive Business!  Many Dive Trip Destinations Are Now Offering Dive Shops Preplanned Packaged Dives!  Ask The Local Dive Shops In Your Area About Travel Dive Packages.  We Can Help Outfit Your Travel Equipment Needs And Work With Your Local Shop.  Just Email Us, Or Have Your Local Dive Shop Email Us.

Critical Must-Do Pre-Trip Preparation

• Visit a physician for a complete physical and for all required immunizations.  Check your medical insurance to determine whether your policy covers illnesses, accidents or injuries outside the U.S.  Keep medications in their original packaging to avoid problems!  Ask a pharmacist to make smaller travel-sized bottles for prescriptions!  There May Be Laws Limiting The Amount Or Drug Type Allowed Into A Country!  Know The Laws!  You Will Be Jailed If You Break Laws Of Other Countries!

• Check Your Passport And/Or Visa To make Sure They Are Valid!  Many countries require at least 6 months of validity left on your passport before you are allowed entry into their country!   It takes about 6 weeks to obtain a U.S. passport and 6 months for a visa, but you should allow longer during peak travel times!

• Check Your SCUBA Diving Certificate Card!  Pack It!  Check Again Before Leaving Your Home! No Certification Card? No Diving!  Many Countries Like Australia Have Federal Diving Laws, Where All Divers Must Show And Have On Them A Valid Dive Certification Card With Photo ID!

• Make A Copy Of Your Complete Itinerary To A Trusted Friend, Professional Or Relative At Home!

• Re-confirm your ticket 24 hours before a domestic flight and 72 hours before an international trip!!!!   Check with the airport to find out how early to arrive; check-in times vary by airport and season.

• In The United States, Check The TSA Web Site For The Latest Security Warnings And Changing Limits On What You Are Allowed To Take On Aboard A Plane!  These Laws Can Change In A Day; And Day By Day!
