Suunto M9i Story

Suunto M9i is designed for both cruising and racing sailors. Measuring and analyzing the surrounding environment minimizes the risks involved in traveling in unknown waters. Information on your performance, on the other hand, provides you with necessary knowledge to improve your training.

In addition to having information available to you at all times, your Suunto M9i records and stores data for later analysis. You can view, compare, and analyze your performance through a dedicated PC-software Suunto Sail Manager.

Suunto M9i keeps track of your results and provides you with means to make rational decisions, whether sailing in a familiar archipelago or racing in the storming seas.

While you are cruising, Suunto M9i delivers useful navigational information and helps reach your destination by keeping your vessel on the correct course. which guarantees that even the more fanatic sailors have room for all their favorite routes.

Suunto M9i helps you get a better start by calculating the correct start line bias each time the wind direction is updated. It also displays the distance to the start line in connection with the start timer to help cross the line at the right moment. After start, the unit helps you discover changes in wind direction on upwind legs and keeps track of laylines for optimum tacking around the buoys.

In addition to a GPS receiver, the Suunto M9i also includes a chronometer with time synchronization from the GPS satellites, a graphical barometer with 7-day memory and an electronic compass.

Suunto Sail Manager completes the X9i system, by taking advantage of the tremendous computing power of today's computers. Suunto Sail Manager enables deeper understanding and graphical representation of the data collected by the M9i during an event.

Navigation by water, can be much easier, by visualizing the routes and sailed tracks on digital ARCS marine charts. Plan routes in advance using ARCS marine charts within the Suunto Sail Manger application on a PC; then attach the M9i to The USB port and transfer the routes directly into the Suunto M9i Wristop Computer.

Suunto Sail Manager serves as a valuable tool for analyzing the data collected by the Suunto M9i, helping the user to discover how to improve performance.

Manage Waypoints

Add, edit and view 'My Points' such as underwater rocks, shallow rocks, visible rocks, anchorages, markers and waypoints.

A Waypoint is a map-position-record defined by user, which holds the map coordinates of a point on Earth.

My Point

A consistent point on the marine chart defined by user; Anchorage, Mempoint, Shallow Rock, Underwater Rock, Visible Rock, signal Waypoint unrelated to a route.

Manage Track Logs

View Tracks on a chart, or a list of trackpoints; edit track-related information; sort tracks in file folders.

Use the 'Track Player' to simulate moving along the track. Divide a track into legs, which are then used to view distance, time and average speed for each leg.

A track is a sequence of waypoints called trackpoints, recorded by the M9i, over a set interval of time or distance.

Manage Routes

Create a new Route, edit existing route, view a route on a chart, store routes in file folders and transfer routes directly into the M9i Wristop Computer Personal Instrumentation System. A Route is a sequence of waypoints to follow, created by the user.

Manage Marine Charts

View, zoom and pan Marine Charts; Install new charts; update old charts; calibrate chart images to GPS coordinates; plot or draw directly on a chart to create routes that can then be transferred into the M9i.

Manage NMEA Data

Import and Export NMEA 0183 Data. Export a track from Suunto Sail Manager to a text file; import the text files back into Suunto Sail Manager. The exported text files will contain data that is compatible with NMEA 0183 standards.

Manage M9i Settings

Suunto Sail Manager provides access to all the M9i settings. Suunto Sail Manager can be used to change all the available parameters within the M9i Including, clearing the log-memory aboard the M9i (making room for newly collected event data).

Working With Multiple Marine Charts

A chart panel can be, for example, a large-scale approach chart to a harbor. Routes , tracks and 'My Points' are viewed in relation to the active panel, even when they are not included in its area.

Race route

Race route consists of a set of waypoints (buoys), which is navigated a number of times. Usually the exact locations of the buoys are not known but the Notice of Race describes the geometry and length of the route beforehand.

When a race route is uploaded to the Suunto M9i, the user is able to update the waypoint coordinates to the exact location of the buoys when sailing past them for the first time. Suunto M9i updates the waypoint locations for the following legs.
